Abstract

The changing demands of the modern world have emphasized the importance of developing 21st-century skills among undergraduate students. In addition to academic knowledge, higher education institutions are expected to prepare students for critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving. Teachers play an important role in transforming university classrooms into innovation hubs that promote active learning. Through innovative classroom practices, this study examined the role of teachers in developing 21st century skills among undergraduate students. Our study examined student perceptions of innovative teaching practices, the extent to which university teachers promote 21st-century skills in classrooms, and the relationship between teaching beyond content and undergraduate skill development. The study used a quantitative design. A self-made questionnaire was developed by the researcher based on literature related to 21st-century skills and innovative teaching methods. A simple random sampling technique was used to select undergraduate students from public and private universities. Data were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Undergraduate students value 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, ethical reasoning, creativity, problem-solving, innovation, and technology integration highly. Most respondents chose Agree or Strongly Agree categories for these competencies, showing strong positive perceptions. However, despite recognizing the importance of these skills, students perceive a gap between the theoretical importance of 21st-century skills and their actual implementation in higher education institutions and classrooms. This suggests that universities need to strengthen institutional support and practical integration of these competencies into teaching and learning practices.. Based on the findings, the study recommends that universities should organize professional training programs for teachers on innovative pedagogical practices, integrate 21st-century skills into curriculum and assessment systems, and provide technological and academic resources to support interactive learning environments. It is further recommended that teachers adopt participatory and experiential teaching methods to prepare undergraduate students for future academic and professional challenges.
