Abstract

Pakistan's agricultural sector, a cornerstone of the national economy, faces a formidable challenge characterized by severe water scarcity, an unsustainable reliance on expensive and unreliable energy sources, and increasing vulnerability to climate change. This study investigates the economic viability and impact of a transformative paradigm: the integrated adoption of renewable energy and smart digital technologies within Pakistan's agrarian framework. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research utilizes a stratified random sample of farm households and employs Propensity Score Matching (PSM) alongside multivariate regression analysis to establish causal inference and disentangle the effects of specific technological bundles. The findings provide robust evidence that the synergistic integration of these technologies serves as a powerful catalyst for improving farm-level economic outcomes. The analysis demonstrates that adoption leads to a substantial, statistically significant increase in net profitability, driven primarily by a drastic reduction in operational input costs. Furthermore, the integration markedly enhances resource efficiency, yielding significant improvements in water productivity and in the optimized use of fertilizers and pesticides. The study concludes that this technological convergence not only offers a compelling pathway to bolstering farmer livelihoods and economic resilience but also presents a strategic national imperative. It effectively decouples agricultural productivity from resource-intensive practices, thereby addressing core challenges of energy and water security. For these benefits to be realized at scale, the research underscores the critical need for targeted policy interventions designed to overcome formidable financial, technical, and informational barriers currently hindering widespread adoption.
