It examines the role of nationalism, EU solidarity, and the Dublin Regulation in shaping response to the refugee crisis in Europe since the migration crisis of 2015. The crisis was a turning point, revealing deep fractures in the European Union as member states come under unprecedented pressure to maintain order in the face of mass migration. Some countries emphasized shared responsibility and a humanitarian focus while others, propelled by nationalist and populist movements, focused on national sovereignty, border security and tougher immigration enforcement. The Dublin Regulation that aims to simplify asylum procedures, generated more frictions by placing most of the responsibilities on the frontline states like Greece and Italy. By investigating the dynamics between national and EU interests in the context of political and public discourses, it sheds light on the contentious trade-offs that fell out of the politics of reception and integration and the implications that has for refugee protection and governance of migration in the EU.
