This study investigates the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on students and teachers in transforming education in the digital age within selected universities of Punjab, Pakistan. The main purpose of the study was to understand how AI affects students' learning experiences, learning outcomes, how it affects teachers' teaching methods, and the opportunities, challenges and ethical issues that come along with using AI in education. This is a quantitative research design and sample size for this study was 367 students and teachers of six major universities (University of the Punjab Lahore, Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan, Government College University Faisalabad, University of Sargodha, Islamia University, Bahawalpur and University of Education Lahore). The method of data collection was the structured questionnaire and for data analysis SPSS software, version 26, with a five point likert scale was used. Correlation analysis results showed that there were significant positive correlations between the integration of AI, students' learning experiences, and academic performance. Results from multiple regression analysis indicated that 3 factors—AI teaching tools, AI assessment systems and learning analytics—improved teachers' teaching efficiency. Further, the ANOVA analysis found that the perception of the respondents regarding opportunities and challenges of AI were significantly different. The study concludes that AI has the potential to transform the teaching and learning journey, but poses ethical questions related to data privacy, algorithmic bias, and digital inequalities. The study suggests that AI should be used wisely and thoughtfully in the education sector, with a focus on the positive impact it can have and the potential pitfalls to avoid.
