Introduction: Research productivity plays a crucial role in the advancement Library and Information Science (LIS). There could be different drivers that encourage research productivity at institutional and individual level. This study aims to assess the research productivity and identify the factors influencing research productivity among LIS professionals in Pakistan.
Methods: we carried out interviews and questionnaire surveys, involving 190 respondents including librarians, faculty members and research scholars (M.Phil. Ph.D.) from 17 Pakistan’s universities. The survey included questions related to institutional support, opportunities, collaborations, time management, research skills, research grants and funding, research environment, guidance, and economic incentives.
Results: A statistically significant mean difference of publications was observed across the professional roles (F(2, 187) = 6.28, p < 0.001). The results indicated that faculty members had a significantly higher mean number of research publications (M = 3.9) compared to research scholars (M = 2.8), and librarians (M=0.1).The top three factors determining the research productivity included research skills and methodologies (n:109), publication economic incentives and professional benefits (n:138), and research grants and funding (n: 93). Other factors, such as professional development opportunities and mentorship and guidance, also demonstrated a significant impact on research productivity.
Implication: This study provides valuable insights into the factors influencing research productivity and offers evidence-based recommendations to enhance research outcomes. By addressing these factors, institutions and policymakers can create a supportive research environment that fosters productivity and advances the field of academia. It is recommended to provide research grants and funding to the LIS researchers.
