Abstract

Islamophobia is a viewpoint or sentiment involving an irrational fear and dislike of Muslims, which results in practices of expulsion and discrimination. It is a distorted opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Although its origins date back to the 1960’s, it became a widespread phenomenon after the September 11, 2001 conflict. Hate crime offenses fueled by the anti-Islamic extremist groups severely increased in 2001, and has never returned to levels reported before the 9/11 attacks. Catholic preachers and evangelists have further fueled this hate by spreading petty lies against Islam and cherry-picking verses from the Quran and books of hadith to find anything that they can use to bully and abuse Muslims living in the west. Many so-called “ex-Muslims" are also playing a massive role in spoiling the reputation of Islam. Many of these ex-Muslims claim to be experts in the field of Islamic studies and they are offered huge sums of money to give lectures in universities across the west.
