Identification of Groundwater Potential Zones using MIF, GIS and RS Techniques in Killa Saifullah District, Pakistan

A worrying shortage of surface water has been caused by increasing irrigation needs and rapid population development. Since it is It can be difficult to find readily available surface water that can satisfy household and agricultural needs, the need for groundwater has grown. Finding surface water supplies that can support household and farming needs has proven to be a difficult undertaking, which has increased reliance on groundwater. Thus, using a comprehensive strategy that included remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), and multiple influencing factors (MIF), this study attempted to categorize possible groundwater zones in the district of Killa Saifullah, Balochistan. Several factors, including precipitation, geology, land use and cover, slope gradients, soil classifications, drainage density, and lineament density, were considered while defining groundwater recharge. The relative importance of each contributing element was determined using the MIF approach. To map possible groundwater zones, a weighted overlay analysis was carried out in a GIS context, integrating all thematic strata using the relative weights obtained from MIF. Thirty observed tube wells and bore wells were noted, and their depths were determined, to validate and verify the model. This study found that the groundwater recharge areas were divided into four classes. High (10.43%), moderate (63.92%), low (15.50%), and extremely low (0.14%). The groundwater inventory data and the identified prospective groundwater zones showed an impressive 90% concurrence in the validation analysis. As a result, these trustworthy results support water users and decision-makers in the sustainable exploitation of groundwater resources in the studied area as a substitute for expanding agriculture and meeting residential needs.
