Abstract

Background: Cinema plays a significant role in shaping and reflecting societal perceptions of gender roles. In the 21st century, the speed of social change and increasingly loud calls in favor of gender equality have shaped how women, men, and LGBTQ+ identities are represented in films. Even though there are noticeable improvements, there should be questions of the intensity and societal effects of these representational differences.

Objective: This study aimed to examine audience perceptions of gender representation in 21st-century films, specifically focusing on female empowerment, male emotional expression, stereotype reinforcement, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and the broader societal influence of cinematic narratives.

Methods: Cross-sectional survey methodology was used quantitatively. The respondents were sampled in a structured questionnaire of 350 respondents in two sections: demographic items and perception-based statements on a five-point Likert scale to gather the required data. Data analysis was achieved through descriptive statistics methods such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations.

Results: These results show a strong positive perception of progressive gender representation in modern cinema. Average gender representation was 4.09 (SD = 0.82), indicating that there is general agreement on the matter that most films in the 21st century contain a stronger and more empowered image of women. The perception of the influence of films on understanding gender roles gave a high mean score of 4.30, with female leadership roles scoring 4.18, which is strongly recognized as an impact of media. The mean of representation of LGBTQ+ characters was 3.95 that shows a moderate yet improving visibility. Despite the obvious growth that was perceived, the respondents also admitted the existence of traditional stereotypes (Mean = 3.21) and worries about equal screen time (Mean = 3.76). The mean of the entire social impact was 4.24 (SD = 0.71), which indicates high consensus that the films have positive effects on gender equality and understanding of gender roles by the young audience.

Conclusion: The analysis makes the conclusion that cinema in the 21st century is seen to have changed significantly in the direction of being more gender inclusive and balanced. Although much has been done regarding female empowerment and representation diversity, there is still residual stereotyping and structural inequalities that are still to be tackled. Modern cinema is not only the mirror of the social change, but also a powerful force in the development of gender norms.
