Background: The rapid expansion of digital technologies has transformed news consumption patterns, shifting audiences from passive recipients to active participants. Interactive journalism has emerged as a strategic approach that integrates multimedia tools, data visualizations, and participatory features to enhance audience engagement. However, empirical evidence regarding its effectiveness remains limited.
Objective: The research will investigate the role of interactive journalism in improving audience engagement, cognition, credibility, loyalty, and revisit intentions, over traditional forms of journalism.
Methodology: The quantitative research design was adopted through the use of structured questionnaire that was administered to 250 digital news consumers. Demographic variables and items based on perception were included in the instrument and were measured on a five-point Likert scale. The data was analyzed through descriptive statistics with the use of frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations.
Results: The results show a high usage of digital news platforms, and most of the respondents are actively involved in the interactive options. The high mean scores indicate that interactive journalism leads to increased engagement, better understanding, share behavior, and revisit intentions. Also, the majority of the participants consider that interactive journalism is more effective than traditional journalism and that it has a positive effect on audience loyalty.
Conclusion: The research findings conclude that interactive journalism enhances behavioral, emotional and cognitive engagement among the digital news consumers immensely. The adoption of interactive characteristics is a long-term and strategic measure of media companies to improve the relations between the audience in the changing digital news environment.
