Abstract

This study investigates the stylistic features of William Wordsworth poem “I Wandered as a Lonely Cloud” through a qualitative analysis based on Geoffrey Leech’s model of stylistic levels. The research aims to identify how Wordsworth’s linguistic choices reflect the central ideas of Romantic poetry, particularly the harmony between human emotions and the natural world. The poem is discussed at five linguistic levels: phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic and graphological with respect to how these stylistic devices function in respect to imagery, rhythm and emotional expression. The analysis shows that Wordsworth’s simple diction, musical rhythm and balanced structure are basic elements in arousing vivid mental images and a deep sense of peace. It also discovers how Wordsworth uses personification, symbolism and sound patterns to transform a descriptively ordinary natural scene into a spiritual and aesthetic experience. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how stylistic analysis can uncover the artistic and emotional power of poetic language.
