Linguistic Variation between Pakistani Sports Press Reportage and British Sports Press Reportage

Abstract

Pakistani English is being treated as a distinct variety of English language. It has its different registers and also distinct linguistic characteristics. English has gained the status of second language in Pakistan. Pakistani English is being used as second language and spoken by nonnative speakers so it is named as the language of outer circle people (Kachru, 1983). Previous studies on Pakistani press reportage based on individual linguistic features and lacked internal and external comparison. Biber (1988) clarified that it is essential to find out the co-occurrence of linguistic features for studying linguistic variations due to its validity. The present study is based on multidimensional analysis of sports press reportage in Pakistani sports print media and British sports press reportage. The present study has explored the statistical significant differences between Pakistani and British sports press reportage categories. In the current study with the help of MD analysis data is analyzed to find the co-occurring linguistic features on five textual dimensions. Finally, findings endorse the previous claims (Iqbal 2014, Ahmad 2016) that Pakistani sports press reportage has unique linguistic characteristics.
