Diverging Perspectives: A Study of Student and Parent Opinions on Parental Involvement in Education

Abstract

Parental participation influences their children performance. So, in this perspective the objective of the present study was:  1) To compare perceptions of students and parents about parental involvement in performance of students. The design of the study was descriptive and quantitative method was used in the present study. The population of the study comprised of all the students of public secondary schools of muzfrabad and their parents. Multi sampling technique was used to select sample size of study. Census sampling technique was used to select the sample size of 520 students of public secondary schools and conveniences sampling technique was used to draw sample size of    336 parents from those eleven schools. The tools of the study were self-developed two questionnaires, one for parents and another for students to collect data from participants of the study. The tools of the study were validated by three professional experts in context of content validity through personal judgment method. Moreover, internal consistency reliability of the tools was checked through cronbachs’alpha model and value was 0.824. Data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics i.e. frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and simple linear regression. The study concluded that parent’ involvement impacts on the academic performance of students and their lies significant differences between perceptions of students and parents about parental involvement in academic performance of students. The study recommended that Schools may facilitate open communication among parents, children, and teachers by consistent parent-teacher meetings, workshops, and feedback sessions. This will assist to align expectations and clarify the roles of parental involvement in academic success.
