Abstract

This study thoroughly delves into transformative approaches within Islamic education, centered on cultivating critical thinking and initiating positive change within the educational framework. Acknowledging the challenges inherent in traditional methods, such as disciplinary bias and a dearth of interdisciplinary integration, the research endeavors to uncover opportunities for transformation. Key among these opportunities is cultural reinvigoration and the incorporation of multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary approaches, identified as pivotal avenues for reshaping the landscape of Islamic education. The theoretical framework underpinning this study revolves around the concept of transformative education in Islam, emphasizing empowerment, liberation, and the influential role played by Islamic values. Moreover, critical thinking within Islamic education is cautiously defined, specifically focusing on its significance in religious contexts. The study accentuates the pressing necessity for positive change, addressing disciplinary bias and fervently advocating for recognizing diverse perspectives within Islamic education. The transformative approaches outlined encompass multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary education, providing insights into critical perspectives, overcoming disciplinary boundaries, integrating progressive environmental aspects, and empowering students through critical reasoning. These approaches can be integrated into existing Islamic education systems through curriculum redesign, teacher training, and developing new teaching materials. In addition, the study scrutinizes case studies and best practices, including implementing Islamic curriculum in multi-religious societies and curriculum renewal initiatives. As the study unfolds, it offers a visionary perspective of Islamic education in the future. This forward-looking exploration contemplates the potential impacts on students, educators, and the broader community, emphasizing the role of critical thinking in shaping individuals capable of positively contributing to society while upholding Islamic values. Discussions culminate with a resounding call to action urging stakeholders in Islamic education and learning to move things forward toward positive change. Concentrating on transformative approaches may usher in this pivotal moment in Islamic education; employing innovative approaches to change is desirable and imperative. These approaches are instrumental in nurturing critical thinking and positive transformation, as well as brighter and more promising change than ever before.
