Abstract

This qualitative study examines the socioeconomic, cultural, familial, and political barriers that restrict women from building professional careers in the Sahiwal district of rural Pakistan. This research aims to find action-oriented solutions and interventions to empower women and drive progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) on gender equality. Interviews were carried out with women of all ages, education levels, and socioeconomic status to provide in-depth insights into the challenges and lived experiences. The Thematic analysis identified common barriers, including societal norms, family obligations, education, workplace discrimination, and geographical variation. The results highlight the importance of a multidimensional strategy specific to local contexts, such as community-based awareness campaigns, inclusive workplace policies, education access regional interventions, and microfinance. The study stresses the interdependence of these barriers and their implications for achieving SDG 5 and emphasizes the necessity for localized, actionable solutions that are contextual and scalable. Pakistan can take short-term and long-term liabilities based on these challenges through focused interventions.
