Impact of Commercialization Policy on Existing Infrastructure of Main Boulevard Gulberg, Lahore, Pakistan

Abstract

This research examines the impact of commercialisation policies on the infrastructure of Main Boulevard, Gulberg, Lahore. Being one of Pakistan's principal urban hubs, Lahore has experienced rapid population expansion, with people flocking in from all over in search of job opportunities and higher living standards. This increased urbanisation—specifically in places such as Gulberg—has stimulated a vertical growth of commercial activity, putting considerable pressure on the available infrastructure. Main Boulevard, which is one of the main arterial roads connecting Liberty Chowk with Jail Road, is a key player in the transportation network of the city. Yet it is increasingly unable to handle the mounting traffic levels and infrastructural loads generated by deep commercialization. The study identifies various fundamental problems confronting the corridor, such as a lack of road capacity, compromised connectivity, and low resilience. Through an examination of past patterns of development and present infrastructural challenges, this study aims to provide insights for better urban planning. The results will help policymakers and urban planners respond to the shortcomings of Main Boulevard while maximizing its potential for sustainable future development.
